HANSA-FLEX has a new product on the market – the Agrar Coupling System. Despite its very compact design, it can handle a very high volumetric flow. The coupling system was developed for use on particularly powerful machines such as tractors, dumpers and heavy-duty tippers. It is also ideal for where plug-in couplings and high performance are required.
An interview with David Zenker, in the Technical Department at HANSA-FLEX, explains the advantages of the new system.
Mr Zenker, HANSA-FLEX has expanded its range for the agricultural industry with the Agrar Coupling System. What was the reason?
With agricultural equipment, we are increasingly en- countering situations where extremely compact units are expected to handle very large volumetric flows. We gave ourselves the objective of fulfilling these re- quirements arising from practice and have introduced a completely new product for the market with as- tounding characteristics: the Agrar Coupling System.
What do “extremely compact” and “very large volumetric flows” mean in reality?
The size 3 plug-in coupling in line was developed exactly with these requirements. It is now designed for high performance applications. By using all agrar components, volumetric flows up to four times that derived from ISO 7241 can be achieved with this high-quality system. From the plug to the sleeve, we are speaking of a max. volumetric flow of around 240 litres per minute. From the sleeve to the plug, it still achieves 190 litres per minute. The system is designed for an operating pressure of up to 250 bar with a bursting pressure of 1,000 bar. Those are really impressive performance figures, achieved with a very compact unit, which makes this system also suitable for very congested installation spaces.
The ability to perform at this level with units having such small dimensions surely means high stresses on the material. How have you succeeded in maintaining reliability?
Actually, such high volumetric flows carry a risk of component erosion. This means sealings might be eroded by the hydraulic oil shooting through. If this happens, the valve can develop leaks. To prevent this, the seals on the valve cone have been repo- sitioned. As a result, the Agrar Coupling System is winning many friends with its absolute reliability under high loads.
Does this high performance capability have to be bought by accepting restrictions in everyday handling and use?
On the contrary! The redesigned one-hand coupling sleeve can be coupled to the coupling plug under full pressure. In addition, the already very low cou- pling and uncoupling forces of the earlier model were reduced further. That means a coupling was developed that is quick and easy to use and perfectly suitable for everyday applications. The mechanical locking system ensures a secure connection.
Safety plays a key role. How does the Agrar Coupling System contribute to minimising the risk when working with hydraulics?
Against the background of the rough environment of agricultural work, one question is more critical than the rest: what happens if the connection is ripped apart by an external force? In this event, the user must ensure that the highly pressurised hydraulic oil cannot escape. Whipping hoses or a blade-sharp jet of oil can cause serious injury to anyone in the vicin- ity. Therefore our coupling system has a breakaway function. If excessively high tensile forces act on the hydraulic line, the coupling releases itself to prevent the line from uncontrolled tearing. At the same time, the valves in the plug and sleeve close and prevent the oil from escaping.
You mentioned “using all agrar components” earlier. Does that mean the user is restricted to Agrar Coupling System components?
No, but we would recommend ensuring all the com- ponents come from that system. The highest performance can be reached only if the plug and sleeve are from the Agrar Coupling System. The reason is fairly obvious: a less capable plug or sleeve would act as a limiting factor. Our system is, however, in terms of the external dimensions, compatible with the available competitor products. Plugs, wrench sizes and connection variants naturally correspond with ISO 7241, Series A (BG3). To ensure exchangeability with competitor products, we offer our coupling system in two installed lengths.
The coupling system is called “Agrar”. Is that meant to indicate that it is suitable for use only in an agricultural environment?
No, the additional name refers only to the industry in which the system is mainly used. The Agrar Coupling System is just as suitable for industrial as it is for ag- ricultural applications where plug-in couplings are called for. It is, however, absolutely ideal for powerful machines such as tractors, dumpers and heavy-duty tippers. Leading trailer manufacturers already install the couplings in the factory.
